Focus on Shanghai

After a few post-revolution decades of decay and neglect, Shanghai has re-emerged as China’s
political, economic, and cultural powerhouse. The government had refrained from risking the Shanghai tax base and promoted economic reforms in its lesser-known siblings of Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

That changed in the early 1990s and Shanghai has been soaring ever since. Now the eighth largest city in the world, Shanghai is the exciting center of the contemporary Chinese art explosion, as well as popular culture and business development.

ShContemporary 2007

September 6 – 9, 2007
Shanghai Exhibition Center
Shanghai

In response to the meteoric growth in the Chinese contemporary art market, this new art fair debuts in early September 2007. The concept for ShContemporary 2007 has been developed by a novel assemblage of art world veterans, including Lorenzo Rudolph, director of Art Basel from 1991 to 2000; Pierre Huber, an art dealer and collector; and the organizers of Bologna Art Fair. Participation at fair is by invitation only and is focused on presenting an evenly balanced mix between Western and Asian galleries. Other initiatives include a concurrent exhibit of young Asian artists and a show of special projects by major international artists primarily from the Asia Pacific region.

Melbourne native Michelle Garnaut developed the concept for M on the Bund after a short engagement as a guest chef for another restaurant in Shanghai. When the restaurant opened on The Bund in 1999, the area had yet to begin its revitalization and many had attempted to discourage Garnaut from selecting this location. But her instincts were right and eight years later the restaurant remains one of city’s top spots specializing in an array of cuisines from around the world.
